The Great American Cleanup / Trash Bash 2011
About the Great American Cleanup
Each spring from March to May, extraordinary acts of civic
pride and renewal take place all across the United States. Under the
leadership of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the Great American
Cleanup™ mobilizes annually more than two million volunteers to
make their neighborhoods more beautiful, safer and healthier places
to live.
The national logo
for the year, “Green Starts Here” is representative of the
message that when we roll up our sleeves and take action in our
community, we build bonds with our neighbors as everyone unites in a
common purpose. “Green” starts with each and every one of us.

In fact, the 2001 Great American Cleanup™ saw volunteers in
more than 12,000 communities in 42 states, plus Washington, DC,
Puerto Rico, Winnipeg, Canada, and St. John, US Virgin Islands.
Volunteers ages 10 to 74+ represented a large variety of organized
groups, including colleges/universities, scouts, sports teams and
military personnel, as well as corporations, local businesses, civic
leagues, youth groups and families. These volunteers cared enough
about their communities to scour, brush, and plant their way through
the nation's largest organized litter prevention, beautification and
community improvement program.
About Trash Bash 2010
Every April for the past 24 years, individuals and groups have
joined Keep Brevard Beautiful in our community to help clean up
unsightly litter. They help remove debris from neighborhoods, parks,
roadsides, shorelines and wherever litter is found. By providing
an example of positive behavior, volunteers help change attitudes
about litter. As a result of the action taken by volunteers during
Trash Bash, our community looks clean and beautiful and there is
a sense of community pride. Sponsored by Florida Inland Navigation
District and Waste Management of Florida, Inc., Trash Bash is an
event supported by the Brevard County Commissioners and all municipalities
in the county. A spirit of friendly competition prevails to recruit
volunteers and reduce the most litter on April 17, 2010. The best
reward is NO UGLY LITTER
We would like to thank all the students who sent in their art
work for the T-Shirt Design Contest. The contest winner this
year is: Melissa Chambers, a student at Rockledge High School.
Congratulations, Melissa! Her artwork is displayed below.

TRASH BASH 2010
PHOTOS
At Lori Wilson Park,
Joan Jackson (Central Chapter member and first time site captain),
welcomed Full Sail University from Winter Park to Trash Bash
2010. They did an outstanding job cleaning at Cocoa
Beach. Thanks to Advisor Marissa Corrente for organizing the
event.
This group from Eau
Gallie High School collected 49 bags of litter on Stewart Ave.
The City of Melbourne's trash Bash was organized by Michelle DeVillo.
Melbourne was a City Winner in the competition of most trash
collected and most volunteers per population over 35,000.
Vice Chairman, Tony
Sasso, escorted County Commissioner, Chuck Nelson, District 2 to
many Trash Bash sites to meet with and thank volunteers. They
are at Lori Wilson Beach in Cocoa Beach.
Many thanks to site
captain, Nancy Ragland, and Cape Canaveral Hospital for being one of
25 business sponsors of the Trash Bash shirts. Nancy has been
site captain for many years and this year found the most unusual
item, a potted silk marijuana plant.
City of Rockledge has
help from a group of Girl Scouts. Rene LeMarr is the site
captain with over 20 years of experience! Lunch can always be
expected after the cleanup!
Two photos above both
taken in Rockledge
Cocoa - a family of
volunteers leave with plants. Lunch was served with a band
playing. Free re-use shopping bags were given out as well as
trees. Many volunteers also were in the Give A Day, Get A Day
program with Disney.
Mayor Blake is with
Site Captain Lisa Moody. The City of cocoa won both City
Awards sponsored by Waste Management. Cocoa had the most
volunteers and trash. And per population size, they also again
won $500 donation to a charity of choice.
Patti Krutenat (Central
Chapter member and first time site captain) helped long time Trash
Bash sponsor, the Schenck Company, clean up at a new site, Veteran's
Park behind Merritt Square Mall.
