Celebrate the St. Johns River: Assist with Cleanup of Watershed

St. Johns River Celebration 2010 is a one-day volunteer cleanup of the St. Johns River, and other contributing waterways throughout the St. Johns River Water Management District in Brevard County. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Keep Brevard Beautiful, Inc. has sponsored the celebration for the past eight years. Locally, Waste Management of Florida supplies all waste management of the debris collected by volunteers. The celebration helps people to see their connection to this important water system. Many volunteers are needed for this event, especially boaters who are willing to patrol the shorelines of the St. Johns River for trash! Actions by each person contribute to the health of the watershed, which covers a 12,400 square mile area. What one does to any part of the watershed drains to the river and its surrounding ecosystem, affecting the entire river.

Volunteers participating in the event should wear durable clothing appropriate to the weather, old shoes and bring any of the following items they may want to use: Rakes, garden carts, nets, jon boats, kayaks, canoes. Pick up trucks are needed for hauling debris.

The winner of this year's poster contest is Mia Tamir, a student at Rockledge High School.  Her entry is pictured below.  Congratulations, Mia!
